A 72 year old grandfather has been shot and killed by Forth Worth, TX police in his own driveway. Police were responding to a burglar alarm call when they saw the armed elderly citizen in his driveway across the street.

Police say the man, Jerry Wayne Waller, who was armed. Neighbors say the man was a good neighbor and surely came outside to see what was going on and make sure his neighbors were OK.

According to a police statement, officers apparently felt threatened by Waller and shot him as many as five times.

According to CBS, a neighbor, Becky Haskin commented on the incident,

After the shooting Haskin said, “The police officers were sobbing uncontrollably and very distraught.”
For the normally quiet and quant neighborhood, Waller’s death is devastating. Neighbors say he and his family have always been very involved in the community. “They are just a nice retired couple, that loved working in their yard, having family over, and grandkids,” Haskin said.

The Forth Worth Police have since released the following statement,

“The events that took place the early morning hours on May 28th will require a significant amount of investigative effort; however, we remain committed to working with our residents and making this process efficient and transparent.

I ask for your patience, your understanding, and most importantly, your prayers for all involved.”

As is standard with any police shooting, the two officers involved have been suspended until the investigation has been completed.

A reminder to be very careful when dealing with police officers when you are armed and in the vicinity of a possible crime. I am curious to find out what type of weapon Waller was carrying, how he was carrying it and how he interacted with officers.
