A Winning Strategy to Defeat the NY SAFE Act Empty A Winning Strategy to Defeat the NY SAFE Act

We have called for full repeal, but we all know that the chances of that happening with this group of legislators, and this governor, are slim. So the answer is clear: We must vote them out in 2014! We’re not going to be able to vote them all out in one year but our goal should be to vote out enough of them to put the rest of them on notice. Once we do that, the legislative session of 2015 will consist of HEAVY lobbying and pressure in order to push a bill for FULL repeal.

There are a number of things that EVERY one of you can do to support this goal:

1) Make sure that you are registered to vote, and get your constitution-loving friends registered as well. To do this, pick up a voter registration form (available at your board of elections or post office) and send it in. It’s easy!

2) Register with one of the major parties. I know this is a hard one for some of you, because you believe that the parties have lost their way and no longer stand for the principles that you believe in. Many people have withdrawn their registrations as a D or R in favor of a 3rd party, or have just remained unaffiliated. The problem with this is that you lose the ability to vote in the primary elections. Have you ever arrived at the polls on Election Day and felt that your choices were “evil” or “less evil”? That can happen when there aren’t enough constitution-loving people voting in the primary election. If you are not registered with one of the major parties, then you are letting other people choose the candidates – this is not what we want. Be a player and help us get good people on the ballot!

3) Become a committeeman for one of the major parties. You must be registered with the party to become a committeeman, of course. We need to make sure the right people get endorsed, and the committees are how it’s done – [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Some county elections are this year – some are next year (call your Board of Elections to find out). If this is an election year, then the petitions must be signed between June 4th and July 11th, so get moving!
If your county does not have elections this year, you can still get involved. You can start attending meetings and find out if there are vacancies. If there are, you can get appointed (and then next year walk your petitions to get elected). If there are no vacancies, you may be able to get appointed as an alternate, allowing you to vote if someone is absent. And if that is not possible, you can at least start learning who’s who, and size up whether the committee is big on constitutional principles or not.

*** If you are serious about repealing the NY SAFE Act, then this last step is NECESSARY and ESSENTIAL! We need to make sure the right people get endorsed, and the committees are how it’s done. If we put up a good challenger and that person doesn’t get endorsed, it’s that much harder to get them elected.

Let’s WIN this thing in the committees and return our parties to Constitutional principles!
