Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - The Governor’s office is warning that scammers posing as tax collectors are targeting New Yorkers.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says a wave of tax collection letters have gone out to New Yorkers under the guise of government notices, but they aren’t legitimate.

According to the Governor, the letters are being issued to people with outstanding tax debt and they include threatening phrases such as “bank accounts and asset seizures pending.”

When recipients call the toll-free number, they are connected with a business claiming to be able to remove the debt for a fraction of the amount owed.

The Governor’s says this is a ruse and that the person should work directly with state tax department officials to pay your bills.

In addition, when you call the number, the representatives will be able to identify themselves and provide an identification number.

People who believe they have been target by the scammers should 1-800-342-3736.
